Karl Rove's revealing, combative and intimate memoir of his years in the conservative trenches -- and at the heights of political power
Courage and Consequence: My Life as a Conservative in the Fight
by Karl Rove
Karl Rove learned about the cost of his Republican
affiliation at the age of nine -- when a JFK supporter
across the street pushed him off his bicycle and beat him
up for supporting Nixon. Far from deterring him, it only
strengthened his convictions -- and led to life devoted to
conservative politics: Rove ran the nationwide College
Republicans before he had even earned a degree, and helped
turn a Texas dominated by Democrats into a Republican
bastion. He launched George W. Bush to national renown by
unseating a popular Democratic governor, and then
orchestrated a Republican White House win at a time when
voters had little reason to throw out the incumbent party.
(continued from above)
And today, Rove's star is rising again. As a popular
FOX News contributor and a regular op-ed writer for the
Wall Street Journal and Newsweek, he's a powerful spokesman
for the out-of-power Republicans. Daily, he reminds
Americans of the very real virtues of the imperfect but
greatly underrated Bush administration -- which are only
becoming clearer in contrast with Obama's outrageous
arrogance, dishonesty with the American people, raw Leftist
government power grabs, and shocking incompetence.
President Obama has overreached; the Democrats' hubris has
created an opportunity for conservatives. The public anger
at the Democrats' spendthrift irresponsibility is palpable,
but that anger needs to be channeled into electoral success
if we're going to have any chance of reversing the course
Obama has set for our nation. And Karl Rove is the
Republican guru of electoral success.
Now, in Courage and Consequence: My Life as a
Conservative in the Fight, Rove intimately relates the joys
and pains of a life committed to the cause -- and sets the
record straight on a controversial career.
Dubbed "Bush's Brain" and "The Architect" because of
his success, Rove has been attacked his entire career --
accused of everything from campaign chicanery to being a
war criminal. Here, he sets down the facts, frankly
responds to his critics, and passionately articulates his
political philosophy and the reasons behind choices he made
during campaigns and in the White House. He also addresses
controversies head on -- from his role in the campaign Bush
waged against Senator John McCain in South Carolina to why
the President did not mislead the nation on Iraq.

In the course of setting the record straight, Rove
names Democratic leaders who acted cynically or deviously
behind closed doors, and even Republicans who lacked
backbone at crucial moments.
Yes, Rove admits to mistakes, and talks frankly about
the heartbreak of his early family years. But Courage and
Consequence is ultimately about the joy of a life committed
to the conservative cause, no matter the cost.
Rove takes you behind the scenes of one of the most
headline-making presidencies of the modern age: As Senior
Adviser to President George W. Bush, and then later his
Deputy Chief of Staff, Karl Rove had incredible access to
Bush and an unparalleled view of his presidency. In the
process, he spells out what it takes to win elections and
how to govern successfully once a candidate has won.
Only one short year ago, America was celebrating the
dawn of a new era of hope and change. Barack Obama, a
freshman Senator with a pitifully thin resume, had sailed
into the Presidency mostly on the strength of not being
George W. Bush. Americans, weary after seven years of war
and blindsided by the biggest financial crisis since the
Great Depression, opted to give the out-of-power party a
chance.
But now, a year into the Obama Presidency, we're
seeing disillusionment on a grand scale. People are
scraping the Obama bumper stickers off their cars and
asking themselves how they could possibly have fallen for
the rhetoric. The rest of America is waking up to what
conservatives knew all along. Barack Obama is not a new
kind of politician. He's not about hope and change,
bipartisanship and transparency. He's a hard-left ideologue
who's never held a position of responsibility outside the
government. He has no clue what to do about soaring
unemployment; his every new policy initiative is another
threat to the health of the small businesses that are the
job-creating engine of our economy. And Obama's policies in
war and foreign affairs have stopped short of disaster only
because he's adopted so many of the Bush administration
policies he vilified in his campaign.
Americans are increasingly ready to reevaluate the
last Republican administration. But, even more important,
Americans who care about limited government, national
security, and national solvency are ready to take back the
government of our nation from the irresponsible,
spendthrift Democrats. Today, conservatives need to listen
to "The Architect" of the two most recent Republican
victories in Presidential politics.

I bought this book because I was interested in the "mystery" of Karl Rove and what he was all about. I found out and more! It is a humbling tale of Karl Rove's personal life and political life. It is told with humor, frankness, and humility. I loved every page! I could not put it down. It also told about the wonderful President that I knew George W. Bush to be and not one who is considered by some to be a big spender and big government.
All in all a must read!
